I grew up on Cavendish Street, opposite Springfield School. I’m not sure where Mace’s shop was. I remember those on Broomhall Street between Fitzwilliam Street and Cavendish Street and the one on the corner of Monmouth Street or Aberdeen Street. There was also Ibbotson’s on the corner of Bolton Street and Victoria Street, Lockwood’s on Broomspring Lane and Frieston’s (?) on Thomas Street. Later, I bought my first cigarettes from the one on Hanover Street, opposite the pub, which was run by a man with a handlebar moustaches whose name I forget.
I grew up in Cavendish Streeet, across from Springfield School. Ours was the 2nd yard up and was the last to be demolished. I have told people about climbing up to look over the wall at the Jewish Cemetery on Bowdon Street but was not always sure they believed me. I’m glad there is photographic evidence that it existed. Does anyone know what happened to the graves, headstones etc. or why the Cemetery was located there in the first place?
