Mary Roberts moved to Sheffield from Worksop in the 1950s, as a requirement of her husband Brian’s job. In the first audio clip below she remembers seeing leafy Collegiate Crescent on a beautiful autumn day.
In the second clip Mary reflects on how little Broomhall Park has changed over the years, and the distinctly different ‘zones’ in Broomhall.
In the final clip, Mary remembered how Derek Hayward, then vicar of St Silas, started a ‘Housewives’ Club’ at the Broomspring Centre (later called the Broomhall Centre).

Does anyone know what has happened to Mary Roberts. My Mum and Mary were best friends at junior school in Creswell and they seem to have lost touch over the last 12 months. We try ringing Mary’s phone but get no answer. Any information about Mary would be appreciated.
hello I remember the centre from schooldays at springfield school we would use it for p.t’ one day per week. the vaulting horse we used but not the pommel horse, that was only used once I recall by our teacher mr barnsley I think he was a p.t instructor fresh out of the army, in fact he would have us walking up to the centre in pairs in a line and he walked by himself on the other side of the road,
