Using the Date search

Single years, decades, centuries and ranges

Where possible, we have added a date relevant to the content of each page on this site.

The ‘Date search’ lets you specify either single years (e.g. ‘1912’), decades (e.g. ‘1940s’) or centuries (e.g. ’18th Century’).

It also allows you to select your own date range (‘from… to…’)

The results will display all the pages with your specified dates applied to them.

You are also able to ‘edit’ your date search, and re-run the search.

The ‘Advanced Search’ option lets you choose between ‘Date of Coverage’ and ‘Date of Creation’. You can use this to hunt for material added to the site (‘created’) since your last visit (if you made a note of the date of your last visit).

Please bear this in mind that it has not been possible to apply a date (of coverage) to every page. And in some cases it has not been possible to apply more than one date that might be relevant to a page. For instance, an article written in 1964 about a photo taken in 1896.
